Maligned by modern media and often stereotyped\, I talian Americans possess a vibrant\, if largely forgotten\, radical past. In Italian Immigrant Radical Culture\, Marcella Bencivenni delves into the history of the sovversivi\, a transnational generation of social rebels\, and offers a fascinating portrait of their political st ruggle as well as their milieu\, beliefs\, and artistic creativity in the United States.

\n
marcella bencivenni

Marcella Bencivenni

\n

As early as 1882 \, the sovversivi founded a socialist club in Brooklyn. Radical o rganizations then multiplied and spread across the country\, from large ur ban cities to smaller industrial mining areas. By 1900\, thirty official I talian sections of the Socialist Party along the East Coast and countless independent anarchist and revolutionary circles sprang up throughout the n ation. Forming their own alternative press\, institutions\, and working cl ass organizations\, these groups created a vigorous movement and countercu lture that constituted a significant part of the American Left until World War II.

\n

Italian Immigrant Radical Culture compellingly d ocuments the wide spectrum of this oppositional culture and examines the m any cultural and artistic forms it took\, from newspapers to literature an d poetry to theater and visual art. As the first cultural history of Itali an American activism\, it provides a richer understanding of the Italian i mmigrant experience while also deepening historical perceptions of radical politics and culture.

About VMF: The Vito Marcantonio Forum honors t he memory of Vito Marcantonio\, one of the most progressive Congressmen in American history. A protégé of LaGuardia and Leonard Covello\, Marcantoni o has been called the Thaddeus Stevens of the 20th century. In the House Marc led the fight against the poll tax and to make lynching a f ederal crime. He defended the rights of immigrants\, and championed Puerto Rico’s independence. In the postwar era\, he fought against McCarthyism a t home and the Cold War foreign policy. He represented East Harlem from th e late 1930’s to the early 1950’s\, and although he ran on multiple party lines\, Marcantonio was a leader of the American Labor Party. Because of h is unshakable stand for progressive causes and defense of working people\, ruling circles and the commercial press heaped on him buckets of slander. His district was gerrymandered and laws changing election procedures were passed with the intent of defeating him. Yet\, he won time after time. Th e attacks\, especially red baiting\, intensified during the McCarthy perio d. In 1950\, the Democratic\, Republican\, and Liberal parties coalesced t o defeat the last American Labor Party Congressman. Despite endless opposi tion\, Marcantonio never backed down. He was planning another run for Cong ress\, when on August 9\, 1954 at the age of 51\, he was stricken by a mas sive heart attack near City Hall. And although he died with a rosary in hi s pocket\, Cardinal Spellman refused him a Catholic burial\; Vito Marcanto nio is buried near his mentor\, La Guardia at historic Woodlawn Cemetery.< /span>

\n

The Back Story:  Vito Marca ntonio (1902-1954)\, who represented his community in the House of Represe ntatives for seven terms (1934-1936\, 1938-1950)\, was elected to office a s a leader of the American Labor Party. Through his activities\, in and ou tside of Congress\, Marc\, as his constituents called him\, earned the sta tus of national spokesperson for American progressives. An unrivaled leade r in the struggle for racial equality\, the rights of the foreign-born\, a nd against McCarthyism in all of its ugly manifestations\, Marcantonio was devoted to the cause of Puerto Rico’s independence. In 1950\, declaring h is need to “vote his conscience\,” Vito Marcantonio was the sole member of Congress to vote against United States participation in what he termed\, the civil war raging in Korea. Vilified and slandered in his life time\, M arc’s East Harlem’s mostly Italian-American\, Puerto Ricans\, and African- American constituents remained fiercely loyal. However\, in 1950\, when co nfronted with a “regular” Democrat who was also endorsed by the Republican and Liberal parties\, Marcantonio was defeated.

\n

Marc was buried in historic Woodlawn Cemetery in the northeast Bronx\, because Car dinal Spellman refused to allow him to be buried in a Catholic cemetery. S ubsequently\, Vito Marcantonio’s colossal work for all those shut out of p articipation in the American dream has been erased from American history.

If Only I We re That Warrior:

\n

A Docume ntary Film by Valerio Ciriaci

\n

The Vito Marcanto nio Forum proudly presents: If Only I Were That Warrior\, with a Q & A with its director\, Valerio Ciriaci

\n

If Only I Were That Warrior explores Italy’s Fascist governmen t’s near-forgotten invasion of Ethiopia in 1935\, which was spurred on by Mussolini’s lust to avenge the Ethiopian people’s successful defense of th eir independence by defeating\, in 1896\, the Italian Army at Adwa. The se cond invasion smashed Ethiopia’s resistance through overwhelming force aid ed by the use of poison gas and other atrocious methods. If Only I Wer e That Warrior is in Italian with English subtitles.

\n
\n
\n

The documentary deftly illuminates this event through an exploration of t he reaction—in Italy\, Ethiopia\, and the United States—to the erection of a monument to the leader of the Fascist invasion\, General Rodolfo Grazia ni\, in his hometown outside of Rome. Valerio Ciriaci’s daring direction a dvances this complex story by moving from Italy to Ethiopia\, and the Ethi opian community in the United States. Isaak Lipzin’s photography presents stunning tableaux of these contrasting backgrounds. Along the way\, we mee t unforgettable Italians and Ethiopians determined that fascist victories not be celebrated. In a very real sense\, If Only I Were That Warrior  is the Italian-Ethiopian analog to Ken Burnes and Lynn Novic’s Vi et Nam War\, and like that masterpiece\, it alludes to a chance for r econciliation. In this way\, Ciriaci and his colleagues have created a tra nscendent and important work. Gerald Meyer

Vit o Marcantonio Forum / Chelsea Rising Reading Circle

\n

\n
The Vito Marcantonio Forum and Chelsea Rising are cosponso ring a Reading Circle that\, since April\, has met\, from 6:00 to 8:00\, e very third Wednesday of the month\, to study I Vote My Conscienc e: Debates\, Speeches\, and Writings of Vito Marcantonio\, edited by A nnette T. RubinsteinThis volume\, which is on sale for $7\, is an invaluable source for studying the life and work of seven-term (1934-36\; 1938-50)\, American Labor Party (ALP) Congressman Vito Marcantonio\, who courageously and brilliantly represented East Harlem and the entire Americ an Left. In addition to his Congressional work\, Marc served as Chairperso n of the ALP\, and ran for Mayor in 1949\, under its banner. As defense at torney on behalf of W. E. B. DuBois\, William Patterson\, and other victim s of McCarthyism\, he succeeded in having their indictments overturned.
\n
\n
I Vote My Conscience presen ts excerpts from Marcantonio’s debates and speeches from each of his seven terms in office. The CR / VMF Reading Circle’s Nov. 15thsession wi ll focus on his seventh-and-last term of office\, where he fought an almos t one-man battle in the vain hope to stem McCarthyism at home and “Wall St reet imperialism” (as Marc called it) abroad. In his last speech\, when he cast the only vote in opposition to US intervention into the Korea n Civil War\, he declared\, “I must vote my conscience!”
